Donabate Basketball Club has been in existence for over 12 years and has been competing in the Dublin Leagues for both Boys & Girls since 2015. While there is a long history of basketball being played in the Donabate and Portrane area the Club has really grown its playing population in recent years from those living in Donabate and the wider North Dublin community. As the local population continues to increase, we are committed to provide a platform to introduce young children to the exciting game of basketball. The Club is run by a dedicated group of volunteers and currently has 3 teams completing in Dublin Leagues, Boys U14 and U15 and Girls U17. It also has a vibrant Academy Section for Girls and Boys. All activities take place in Donabate & Portrane Community Centre who provide great support for the Club. We rely on our very generous local sponsors to help with the running of the club and sponsoring club gear.
The Club has enjoyed great success in winning a couple of leagues including Boys U17 League in 2022 (100% winning record) and this year winning the U14 Div 2 League with a fantastic record of 13 Wins & 1 defeat. Key Contacts: - Paul Mitchell – Club Secretary, Coach U15 Boys and U17 Girls -Con O’Leary & Alan Proctor – Coaches of Under 14 Boys -Marie O’Leary – Child Protection Officer - Frank Koenicke & Serge Nyange – Boys Academy Coaches - Sophie Mitchell & Katelyn Byrne– Girls Academy Coaches.
We have seen several previous and current players achieve great success in the game, including some current players who have been selected on Basketball Ireland East Region Academy. A number of ex-players are enjoying great success with other clubs, but we take pride in having developed them through the academy and teams. The Club has also helped the local secondary school Donabate Community College achieve notable success. We would urge any people living locally to contact us if they have interest in getting their children involved or volunteering to help with coaching. Contact can be made in DPCC where there are information boards that have relevant contact information.
The LSA Little Athletics group, with their parents and coaches, had a great time competing at the all-Dublin Spraoi Games at the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Abbosttown at the end of February. Sproai Games is a new concept in Dublin Athletics competition for children aged 7 to 10. It gives age appropriate competition experience for younger athletes in a move away from individual competition. It is a team-based competition where each athlete participates in a run, jump, and throw event, just like the events they have been practicing in training. LSA was one of seventeen Dublin Athletics clubs participating in the world class venue that is the NIA. We had four LSA teams competing in an event run entirely by volunteers from all the clubs. Team scores were displayed on the Big Screen - we could see how every athlete’s contribution helped the team. Our athletes were very excited to see Irish Olympian and former European Champion David Gillick volunteering as an official at the Throws event. David holds the Irish 400m records, both indoors and outdoors - his National Record outdoors is 44.77 seconds! Our athletes had lots of fun and really enjoyed the excitement of competing on a real indoor track in this amazing venue. We were very proud of our athletes and how well they behaved during the competition. We are very grateful to the parents and coaches for their efforts on the day. We always welcome new members and volunteers. We in Swords Karate Club were pleased to welcome JKS Honbu Instructor Shohei Toyama Sensei recently. Ireland was his first stop on his whistle stop tour of Ireland, England and Scotland and it was his first visit to Ireland. Over the two-hour seminar we got to experience his high level of technical prowess as he brought the class through a range of kihon, kata and kumite. In kihon he emphasised correct hip and foot movements during kihon drills for gyakuzuki. He also emphasised the recovery of higiashi for mawashigeri in basics and kumite. This was rounded off with a study of Jion kata. The main emphasis of the evening across kihon, kumite and kata were the correct use of the hips. It was all very enjoyable. The course was attended by over ninety participants from Swords Karate Club and other JKS Clubs from around Ireland. It was a great turn out. We are looking forward to May, when we will have a visit by World Chief Instructor Kagawa Shihan 9 th Dan JKS.
The Club is always looking for new members (Children, Young People & Adults). Contact Dermot on 087-8073885 for details on how to join our club. You can also contact us on Facebook: JKS Swords Karate Club or on Instagram: @jks_swords_karate_club

This past month at Junsa has been busy in our preparation for our upcoming local competition. There will be clubs from all over Dublin and the surrounding areas. This tournament will be a decider to see if some of our players will travel abroad to compete for Junsa. If their performances are good, then they could make the next step to international competition. We have also been focusing on our under 6’s age group, teaching them the basic fundamentals of Taekwondo and hand, foot and eye coordination, skills that will stand to them in life.

The club had without doubt its biggest ever travelling numbers at the end of January when over 90 took part in the Raheny 5 mile. This was followed in February by great participation at the Trim 10 mile, Dungarvan 10 mile and the Donadea 50k. The latter was also the occasion of Peter Doyle’s 100th marathon. It was fitting that he crossed the line with another member of the 100 club , Eddie Hamilton. Daniel O’Brien has been in fine form with multiple podium finishes in recent cross country races. Our 40 day 6am runs started in February so why not join us for a few of the early morning 5k’s this month. Finally, we’re looking forward to the annual Lusk 4 mile on Sunday 3rd March at 3pm. Thanks to all who have been working on the preparations and to those helping out on the day.

2024 kicked in when we returned to training on 2nd January. Christmas break and goodies long forgotten, all classes resumed in the first week of the New Year and all trained well. We hosted our first event of the new year on 7th January – hosting the JKS National Brown & Belt training session as well as the JKS Open Squad Session, welcoming our friends from around the country to Swords. 2024 will be a busy year with these events being held monthly to help raise funds to send our students who have been selected to represent Ireland at the World Karate Championships in Japan this July. As part of our fundraising efforts, we will be holding a Race Night Fundraiser on Saturday 17th February 2024 in Graingers. The Manor Inn, Swords, Co. Dublin. It promises to be an exciting night with 10 races, raffle and auction. All members of the community are invited to attend and have a good night out while at the same time supporting the local kids selected for Japan 2024. We have Toyama Sensei from the JKS Japan Headquarters visiting us at the end of January. He is a truly phenomenal technician, with superb karate skills and we hope to have a very enjoyable training session with him. He is one of three Japanese instructors we will have visiting us this year, with Kagawa Shihan visiting in May and Yamaguchi Sensei visiting in October. We are looking forward to an exciting fun packed 2024. The Club is looking always for new members (Children, Young People & Adults). Contact Dermot on 087-8073885 for details on how to join.
