The weather may not have played ball with us, recently but it was great to see the return of the Beachy Cup to Balbriggan after a three year Covid induced absence. This Leinster North East competition, named in memory of John Beachy McCreanor took place at Balbriggan RFC. Teams from Ardee, Ashbourne, Balbriggan, Boyne, Navan and Ratoath took part. Despite the heavy rain the day was a great success. Balbriggan won the Beachy Cup, Boyne won the shield and Ashbourne won the bowl. The competition was played in great spirit with old friendships renewed. Thanks to Beachy’s family, Tanya and daughters Kasey and Iona who were on hand, with Kasey and Iona making the presentations. Thanks to our North East referees who officiated over all the matches that took place. Thanks also to Area President, David Rowland from Ratoath and Chairman of the Leinster Junior Committee, Pat Carolan from Wicklow who were also present. Finally, a special thanks to North East Hon Sec Cathal Myles for all his work in organising the Beachy Cup this year. It simply would not have happened without all his efforts. Here are some photos from the day including the traditional North East Group photo of all the players and match officials.

Many times over the last 20 years our sub editing team have spotted typos and other small grammatical errors among the thousands of pages and millions of words we have published in the 5 Local magazines across Fingal. During those times we have laughed at most, queried others between us and even spotted errors at the last minute prior to sending it to the printers. However there is an old saying, ‘The man that never made a mistake never made anything’ and boy did we make a big one last month when a heading said Malahide United had won the AFL ..eh duh ..wrong code of football and wrong pics (The pics were of Syls GFC) so I suppose the only thing we got right was it was two Malahide clubs. So our sincere apologies to Malahide United and to Syls however we were pleasantly surprised with the hundreds of messages we got pointing out our mistake and we promise to do our best to ensure that doesn’t happen again. So here is to another 20 years before the next one and thanks to our readers for pointing it!
Syls Cycling Club Malahide is happy to announce its newest cycling programme “100k in a day”, a 6 weeks programme for cyclists with some cycling experience that are looking to get back into the sport. The programme starts on September 19th and offers a mix of theory and practical classes including group cycling techniques, cross-training (lectured by a professional cyclist), a bike maintenance workshop (from Jimmy’s Bike Shop in Portmarnock), and more! The theory classes will take place on Monday Evenings at Malahide Community School, while practical classes will happen on Saturdays or Sundays, starting at 9 am from Malahide. Cyclists are expected to have a roadworthy bike, cycling helmet, appropriate cycle clothing and cyclinginsurance from Cycling Ireland. According to Brendan Ryan, the Club’s Training and Development Officer, “The focus of this programme is to carefully guide cyclists through a training plan as it is aimed at those who are looking to re-start or continue cycling for health, fitness, recreation, commuting or to tackle a challenge or charity ride. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and get out into the fresh air” For an inactive cyclist, starting back can be a scary prospect. This easy-to-follow plan will have you confidently undertaking 60 - 70km spins, with the goal of completing 100K in a single spin by the end of the course. With the focus of putting theory into practice during cycle spins, Syls Cycling Club has successfully held different training programmes, including its highly popular “Couch To 50k” that happens every spring. Through the duration of the 100K in a day programme, cyclists should be able to:(1) Build fitness week by week (2) Increase cycling distance and ability by participating in spins with Syls CC (3) Finish the programme with a 100K spin, while having 1 or 2 coffee breaks to refuel. For course participants, the enrolment gives you Syls CC membership until the end of 2023! We had a little bit of LSA Track and Field history made this summer when our Ladies team, ranging in age from 15 to 53, qualified for the final of the National Track and Field Outdoor League. The Track and Field League is a Team event where teams compete in up to twenty one disciplines over the course of the day, and score points in their best fifteen events. This year was the first time in our eleven year history that we’ve been able to field a team in the National League. The final took place in Tullamore on the 14th August with our athletes taking part in the full range of track and field events. It was a great day out for the LSA Ladies team rounding off an exciting summer of competition.A big thank you to all the athletes who made such an effort over the three rounds of the National League. Thanks also to the supporters who were a crucial part of the day. It was a huge achievement for LSA to field a team and make it to the final in our first year. Well done all - onwards and upwards! Our Masters men were also in action in Tullamore the same weekend, and brought back four National medals for their efforts in the National Masters Track and Field Championships. Xavi Hubert Silver in High Jump, Enda Gavigan Silver in 100m and Bronze in 200m, and Steven Rice Bronze in 5000m. Great inspiration for our juvenile athletes! The outdoor track and field season has now come to an end and it’s back to training again. For more details of how to get involved please see our social media and website.

St. Itas AFC football for kids from 5-9 years will be running again this season with the aim of providing the basic skills for the next generation of football players. The sessions are run on Saturday mornings for an hour in St. Ita’s Ballymastone Campus. Two separate sessions are run with the 9.45am session for girls only and the 10.00am session primarily for boys. Sessions are run in a fun manner, and are aimed at players who have limited or no experience of football. The club hope to build upon a very successful season which ran from 2021 to 2022. According to Robbie Sinnott, who helps run the girl’s academy: “Last year saw our previous academy players achieve incredible outcomes on the U12, U13 and U14 panels, but we also saw huge improvement in our current academy players who hopefully will develop into the club’s future stars. We had a group of Ukrainian kids join us mid-season, and our own girls were fantastic in how well they included them immediately and created a fun hour for them on Saturday mornings.”While some players stay for two-three years in the Saturday morning sessions, there also is a ‘graduation’ of a cohort of players, who go on to form teams who will play in inter-club competitions in the coming season. According to Niall Hayden, who coordinates the boys training: “We had a new boys team and a girls team emerge this year, and hopefully the Saturday morning sessions will have given them the core footballing skills which they can develop and grow in the future.”The boys and girls training every Saturday benefits from the sponsorship of Glenveagh Homes, whose support has been critical in helping fund the training, and kitting out emerging teams for the new season. We are delighted to announce Roberto Bonello as the new Director of Underage Coaching for Glebe North FC. Roberto will be responsible for all aspects of coaching education for both underage Players and Coaches alike. Roberto has a wealth of coaching knowledge and experience that will only benefit our club going forward. Congratulations and best wishes Roberto.

We are delighted to announce Ian Murphy as Men’s team Captain for the new season.
Ian takes over from Conor Caldwell, who was at the helm for an incredible five seasons! This was Conor’s second stint as Captain, having previously captained the team in season 2009-2010. We want to thank Conor for his outstanding service to Balbriggan RFC. Conor isn’t going too far and will still be involved with the team as a player. Ian has an impressive record as a player. He has played with Balbriggan RFC since he was a youth. Ian has been ever-present on the men’s team and has more than 100 Caps playing senior rugby for Balbriggan RFC. Ian mainly plays at out-half and centre, but has also played in other positions including wing, full-back and wing-forward. We wish Ian well as he leads the team into the new season.
