It has been brilliant to see all of our members return to group training in recent weeks. The sports hub was back to being a hive of activity on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Well done to all that were following individual 5k and 10k training plans over the last few months. There were some fantastic times recorded in recent Virtual races particular in the Portmarnock Road to Beach 5k with Sheila Bourke finishing 2nd. Best of luck to all members that have just commenced Half Marathon or Marathon training plans.

May brought us at Donabate Portrane Special Olympics Club the best news ever; with an ease in Covid restrictions and thanks to hard work by our safety committee we have returned to ‘live’ sessions on Saturdays.I don’t know who was more excited, our volunteers, the parents or the athletes!Despite the rain, and thanks to the covered yard area in DPETNS, we welcomed our young athletes and parents back in pods of fifteen, and it was a privilege to see the smiles as they saw their friends face to face for the first time in so long.We are all sure they could all tell we adults were smiling under our masks as we marvel at how much they have all grown up over the last 15 months. We thought it might be difficult to run our sessions within the restrictions, but as always our superstars adapted to the challenge and were soon running, hopping, skipping, balancing.Playground games are a great hit; with the children enjoying their turn at being “it” and calling the shots in Red Rover and What’s the time Mister Wolf. While activities were under way in Donabate, one of our parent volunteers, Maedhbh, took on her first marathon to raise funds for Down Syndrome Dublin and our club. Our club followed her progress with some of our families going along to support Maedhbh on her route. We are all very proud and grateful to Maedhbh who raised over €3500. Local Athletics Club, LSA are great supporters of our club and will help us with the launch of our athletics programme as soon as we are able.We are delighted that they have chosen us as their charity partner for their first official event this summer to celebrate their 10th anniversary.Thank you LSA.

LSA (Lambay Sports & Athletics), is an athletic club in North County Dublin with juvenile and adult members, founded in 2011.This is our first club race and we would love if you could join us in our celebrations.Unfortunately due to restrictions this year we can only be with you in spirit and hope from next year to continue with an annual road race around the beautiful coastline of Donabate and Portrane. For now we are celebrating everything 10 with a 10k and 10 mile. We’ve also added a 5k and juvenile races so everyone has a race to suit them. So get the family out and run, jog, walk or roll your distance between 12th to 18th July 2021. We will have spot prizes which will be announced over the next couple of weeks too for winning club teams (it doesn’t have to be an athletic club) and age category. Our nominated charity is Donabate & Portrane Special Olympics Club, a new club with a big heart, catering for kids with disabilities from all over North Dublin and beyond. If you would like to train for this event, join the club and share in the celebrations, please email Heather on lambaysportsathletics@gmail.com. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook - Search “LSA”.

Our Senior team manager Adam Foley has regretfully stepped away from his position with the club with immediate effect. Adam has taken this decision as he cannot give the position his full attention as he is pursuing a very successful playing career in the LOI Premier Division. We are sad to see Adam go but Glebe North wish him every success as he continues to shine on the playing field. We thank Adam for his tireless work with the club and look forward to welcoming him back to the club in the future whether it is as a player or coach or in any capacity (His blood still flows green). The club have appointed Darius Kierans as the new manager of our senior team. Darius comes to the club as a highly recommended and experienced coach. We look forward to working with Darius and wish him the very best as he takes over the reigns from Adam.

Well done to our members and their families who took on a 24 hour relay challenge in April from Friday 3pm to Saturday 3pm in aid of Daffodil Day. There were 48 half hour slots to fill across the 24 hours and none were left blank. The weather was kind although those hardy enough to fill the slots in the early hours of Saturday morning had to endure sub zero temperatures. Thanks to the organisers. Donations kindly accepted to Daffodil Day 2021.
A reminder to parents to renew their children’s registration now that Juvenile training has resumed. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for full return to training details.A big thank you to our coaches & mentors for sending weekly training plans to keep us motivated while in lockdown. Good luck to everyone preparing for the Portmarnock 5k / 5 mile and the Drogheda 10k that take place in May. Don’t forget to register. Our photos all show those taking part in the Lusk AC 24 hour relay for Daffodil day.

Former players from Malahide United are making their mark both here and in England showing how the great coaching at the club has been a huge success. The club truly is the home of Football in North County Dublin with 1,200 footballers playing on 55 teams and in two academies. Based in Gannon Park, one of the finest facilities in Ireland. This month we feature some former players who are really heading for the top in their respective leagues both in this country and in the English Leagues.

Firstly we say congratulations to Conor Grant who made his first league start for Rochdale AFC in their League 1 game against Northampton Town on February 23 last. Conor made the switch from Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day this year. The game ended in a nil all draw with Conor contributing greatly to his teams performance which should ensure lots more starts for him soon with his new club.

Next Everyone at Malahide United would like to wish Darren Craven the very best of luck as he embarks on League of Ireland life with Bray Wanderers. Darren has been with the club from Nippers right the way through to Seniors and was captain as we won the Leinster Senior League for a historic first time. Darren has also been capped at Junior level for FA Ireland over the last few seasons. Bray are getting one hell of a player and an even better man. All the best Skip.
